Dog’s Story: If Your Dog Could Talk, He Would Tell You…
Thanks for Saving Me and Making Me Part of Your Family
Every morning when your bright smile brightened the room, I wish that I could talk to you. To let you know you how much I appreciate what you have done for me over the years.
We were the first ones to wake up in the morning and the last ones to go to bed at night. The early morning runs before other people woke up, as we watched the sun rise from the East. Sometimes words speak express feelings better, and I would like you to know. Thank you for showering me with unconditional love all this time. You allowed me to explore the world. I dug up holes, followed other animals’ scent trails and hunted for nothing in particular. You let me be a puppy. I hope you knew how proud and excited I was when I fetched a ball you threw in the air.
Even when I was wrong, you never scolded me or beat me up. You made me strong, healthy and obedient. Thanks for saving me and making me part of your family. You are the only family I have known, and the best family anyone could ask for, to be honest!
That Day
That day you came for me at the shelter, I still remember like it was yesterday. From the moment, you walked in. My face lit up. Something about your demeanor and personality that made you look very friendly, even to a rescued puppy. I was abandoned by my previous master, and that hurt me. How could he? What wrong had I committed? After all, we had gone through together. I never found answers to my questions, but they did not matter anymore. I was young and scared then, and the future looked dark.
But there you were, looking like you just fell from heaven. The vet provided you with a list of the available puppies up for adoption, but you did not keep your eyes off me. That moment I knew you were the one. I kept hoping and praying that you will choose me. As luck, would have it, you chose me! It was one of my happiest day ever. We had an immediate connection that kept growing over the years.
First Night in House
I remember the first night in your warm house. I had mixed emotions. At this moment I was thrilled and scared at the same time. I was supposed to get used to the new surroundings that were now my new home. You could have to put me in a kennel outside, but you didn’t because it was cold outside. The warm shower, grooming, and nail trimming were things I had not experienced before. You were staying alone, and I loved it that way because I was afraid of many people. The scrumptious food was like nothing I had tasted before. Then came the next day when you took me out for playtime. The fun we had is incomparable. I would be euphoric to see you in the evenings, and I would run and jump to you, wagging my tail in excitement. Your presence signified fun times.
Growing Family
Then the time came for you to move in with your girlfriend. I felt a bit threatened. I thought she would take my place and you will be all over her, ignoring me in the process. Surprising enough for me, this was not the case. It was a big relief for me. In fact, it turned out to be one of your best decisions. You deserved to have someone who understood you and loved you back. You girlfriend was so sweet to me too. I watched as your relationship grew over time. Time moved quickly and soon; it was time for you to get married. The smile on your face on your wedding day was like the one you wore when you took me from the shelter.
Children
Next came your adorable twins. I finally had two young playmates. How delightful they were when they were tiny. There was never a dull moment with them. If they were not patting my back, they were singing to me songs they learned at school. We became a big happy family. We began going to road trips and family photo shoots. Boy, didn’t we have fun on the adventures and escapades?
The pictures are still hanging on the living room wall as a reminder of where we came from and what we mean to each other. Hey, do you remember that day, after the movies at the mall, when we danced to loud music from your car stereo till a cop pulled us over? Sweet times. I reminisce the evening strolls on the beach as we watched the sunset. Those peaceful nights when we just lay there and gazed at the moon and the stars as if we expected them to say something. Sleeping arm in arm and being woken up by the chirps of the early morning birds as they announced the arrival of another beautiful day. I never wanted these moments to be over. They were our private times together.
Dog’s Story, Last Chapter
Now I’m old and weak. I frequent the vet’s clinic for regular checkups and treatment. The whole family is distressed and crying over me. I can’t play or run a lot like I used to. I appreciate you sticking by me now that I need you more than ever. It’s time. I have no regrets at all. Neither am I afraid because, with you, I have everything I need.
When I’m gone don’t be sad, just look back at the memories and smile because we had many happy days. Everything will be alright, just remember God’s timing is the best. Everything is good in the end. If it is not okay, then it is not the end yet. Not even death can break the bond we had. I wish I had a way to communicate with you. I can read the sadness written all over your face that used to have a big smile at all times. When you are sad, it also makes me sad. I would love you to hear this little song I wrote for you telling you that I never took for granted your love and affection. I had the best time of my life with you, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Let’s meet on the other side.
PS I love you xx
